Our Centre, which is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing up until June 2013, aims to aid the growth in knowledge about Indigenous Tobacco Control.
We began in September 2003 and are based within the Onemda VicHealth Koori Health Unit at The University of Melbourne.
Currently we have 10 full time and part time staff who are working in a variety of ways to boost the profile of Indigenous tobacco control and encourage and assist others undertaking work in this area.
Through its activities CEITC has worked to connect Indigenous and non-Indigenous tobacco control practitioners and organisations and also advocates for tobacco control, both in the Indigenous community controlled health sector and the broader NGO and Government sectors. During this time CEITC has firmly established itself as a node of knowledge exchange, bridging the gaps between practice, research and policy.
CEITC, in its role as a knowledge hub, has worked to increase capacity by pursuing a number of objectives including:
- develop the evidence base for Indigenous tobacco control by systematically synthesizing current knowledge and best practice;
- identify critical gaps and promote research and evaluation activity to address these gaps;
- promote the development of evidence based policy and practice;
- develop infrastructure and programs which support effective knowledge exchange; and
- develop the capacity of the Indigenous tobacco control workforce with a particular focus on Aboriginal Health workers.
