Smoke-free pregnancy project- Aboriginal women and their families
- Reduce the rate of pregnant women who are smoking, thereby improving the health outcomes for babies and children.
- Increase the number of health care providers who are trained on how to provide a brief smoking cessation intervention
- Increase the number of Aboriginal pregnant women and or their family members who are referred to the quitline.
Organisation or Department:
Quit SAProject Activities:
- Education of a percentage of AHW
- Offering NRT to pregnant women and their families
- Promoting Aboriginal specific written resources
Project Timeframe:
Funded to 30 June 2011
What in particular helped the project?:
- Having a close working relationship with the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia (AHCSA) and Indigenous tobacco control project officers.
- Gaining trust within Aboriginal Health Services.
- Focussing on harm minimisation vs Quitting smoking
What in particular didn't work so well?:
Not sure as yet if the quitline is the way to go for some Aboriginal people. I am keen to pilot face to face support groups
Project Evaluation:
- We will be evaluating the education sessions to health workers
- Collecting data on the number of referrals to the pregnancy quitline
- Analyzing data on the rates of smoking in pregnancy at a state level each year
- Collecting data on numbers of resources distributed
- Develop a register of staff trained as part of the smoke free pregnancy project
