Reducing smoking amongst pregnant aboriginal women in Victoria: an holistic approach
Using an action research approach this project will develop, implement and evaluate a multifaceted holistic intervention aimed to reduce smoking amongst pregnant Aboriginal women during pregnancy.

The project team will engage and collaborate with health workers and women to develop a multi-faceted holistic intervention which will include:
- training for health workers
- creating supportive environments
- providing group support for pregnant women
Research questions:
- Does strengthening the capacity of Aboriginal Health workers, Koori Maternity Service workers and In-Home Support workers around smoking cessation contribute in the long term to a reduction in smoking for pregnant Aboriginal women?
- Does strengthening the capacity of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations to deliver personal support and smoking reduction programs to pregnant Young Aboriginal mothers and Aboriginal women contribute in the long term to a reduction in smoking for pregnant Aboriginal women?

This project is funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services over a 3 year period (Dec 2008-Dec 2011) with in-kind contributions from QUIT, Women's Alcohol and Drug Service, the Aborginal Women's Business Unit and the Centre for Excellence in Tobacco Control.
