Puyu Wiya Smokecheck

This project aims to reduce tobacco smoking prevalence, initiation, consumption and passive smoking among Aboriginal people in South Australia.

Organisation or Department:
Aboriginal Health Council of SA Inc
Project Activities:

Smokecheck Tobacco Brief Intervention Program has been conducted in previous years. The new revamped project will be tailored Puyu Wiya Smokecheck Program, which includes smoking cessation with quit coaching & NRT

Project Timeframe:

The project is funded until 30th June 2011

What in particular helped the project?:

The cultural focus of SmokeCheck is excellent but only consists of a brief intervention program, we need quit coaches based in health services/clinics

What in particular didn't work so well?:

Was only a brief intervention program with no follow up support

Summary of Findings and Recommendations:

Ongoing support is required, otherwise smokers who have quit will relapse when stress or smoking triggers occur.

Project Evaluation:

The SmokeCheck Brief Intervention program has been evaluated
