WA Prisons Smoking Reduction Plan

To reduce the smoking prevalence of Aboriginal inmates in WA prisons

Organisation or Department:
Adult Custodial Directorate
Project Activities:

Use of the SmokeCheck and WA Say No to Smokes program resources

Project Timeframe:

Ongoing

What in particular helped the project?:

Use of a CD and accompanying transcript booklet featuring success stories as told by Aboriginal people from around WA including entertainers and local identies from each region have been particularly successful for non-literate prisoners.

What in particular didn't work so well?:

Currently offering the Fresh Start Program to prisoners but the program although modified for by the facilitators is not ideal for Aboriginal prisoners. Community resources available currently are not always transferable to the prison environment

Summary of Findings and Recommendations:

Working on a proposal to have a National Forum on Smoking and Prisons and also a peer led smoking reduction/cessation program
