Beyond the Big Smoke
To implement a range of strategies designed to have a positive impact on smoking behaviours amongst staff and clients of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services. To offer an accessible, community controlled and culturally appropriate environment for smoking cessation intervention.
This is a multicomponent program including the following activities:
- the provision of a tobacco control training program for Kimberley ACCHSs staff, which aimed to increase the use of brief interventions by staff. This includes the use of screening systems to monitor individuals using the AMS and follow them up to help prevent individuals developing tobacco related illnesses.
- the provision of a KAMSC support group. Furthermore, a 'yarning about tobacco' competition was also run to increase communication about tobacco use.
- A support group was set up for staff in the KAMSC office in the Kimberley to provide them with support. Emphasis was on being non-judgemental and normalising behaviour. Encourage staff to take up physical activity to help with stress and fear of gaining weight.
- health promotion materials being provided, as well as 'congratulations on Quitting Smoking' banners. In addition, materials were developed specifically for school aged children (e.g., work sheets, hats, drink bottles). They have a stall with various community specific merchandise (e.g., badges in community language) that is set up on carnival days/community events. Also have a newsletter bulletin about the various activities of KAMSC in relation to tobacco control.
- NRT is also available to staff of KAMSC and the AMSs clients.
- Making Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services smoke free for staff and clients. In addition, staff are not allowed to smoke in their uniform at any time.
Began 2006 and is ongoing and is funded by Healthway and the Australian Respiratory Council
Aboriginal Health Council of Western Australia
No evaluation has been done to date. The smokefree workplace policy implementation component is being evaluated to determine any gaps between policy and actual practice and the implementation process.
Beyond the Big smoke publishes a regular Newsletter
