Tobacco Control Resources and Websites

CEITC Resources

CEITC have developed a number of downloadable resources aimed at Aboriginal Health Workers to assist them in developing and running Tobacco cessation programs through their health service. See CEITC publications and resources page for our 'Talkin' Up Good Air' resource kit, 'What do we know about' and 'Top Tips' series of fact sheets, 'Smoking Matters' and 'Clearing the air on passive smoking' brochures. Some of these resources are also available in hard copy.

 

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Resources and Tools

Get active - Eat Good Tucker - Live Longer - This is a national program of the Australian Government's Closing the Gap Initiative. This website is designed to share information and stories about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander chronic disease health promotion activities and events. It contains information about hosting Healthy Community Days and accessing a grants program for health promotion activities.

The Community Health Action Pack on this website is a practical 'how to' guide to planning and running health promotion activities. It contains a 10 step guide to project planning, project planning templates, a guide to running your project and a resource section including fact sheets

Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Service Inc (KAMSC) has a resource section on their website which features resources developed for their 'Beyond the Big Smoke' project.

National Action to reduce Indigenous Smoking rate website outlines the measures agreed to by the Federal Government together with the State and Territory Governments as part of the COAG 'Tackling Indigenous Smoking Initiative'

Tackling Tobacco: Action on Smoking & Disadvantage - Supporting disadvantaged people to quit smoking

The Cancer Council NSW has developed a new strategy to reduce smoking related harm among the most disadvantaged groups in NSW. Formerly the Tobacco Control and Social Equity Strategy, it addresses tobacco as a social justice issue. The program will see the organisation working in partnership with social service agencies to reduce the prevalence of smoking among disadvantaged groups.

Smoking: an Indigenous health challenge is an online webcast presented by the Rural Health Education Foundation and features a discussion chaired by Dr Norman Swan examining a range of interventions to both help prevent tobacco use and assist Indigenous Australians to quit. The program can be viewed online or a DVD can be ordered free of charge.

Time to stop or slow down? Your local health staff can help are resources produced by the Top End Tobacco Project which have been made available for other health organisations to download and use.

Alternatively Quit Victoria Resources have a comprehensive website full of information and resources that can be ordered. These resources are available free of charge to Victorian Aboriginal communities and for purchase for all other states.

The Department of Health and Ageing have a section on their website where you can download PDFs or order hard copies of posters and publications from current and previous government social marketing campaigns. Most of the resources are aimed at the broader Australian population however their are a few resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Aukati KaiPaipa  This website has been developed specifically to assist Maori people to quit smoking

Te Reo Marama is a Maori Tobacco Control advocacy and leadership site. It also contains information relating to the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC)

Inuit Tobacco Free Network Resource Section  This website contains resources for health workers working in remote Inuit communities

 

Other International Resources

GASP - the International smokefree catalogue is a one-stop shop for stop smoking, smokefree and tobacco education resources. They have spent 30 years developing a range of resources aimed at supporting healthcare and education professionals working in the field. They are based in the UK.

 

Training

Indigenous Spiritual Wellbeing Tool Box - provides training for health care workers in Indigenous communities with a focus on supporting and assessing clients with mental health, alcohol and other drug issues. Learners complete a range of learning activities in simulated rural, remote and urban health care clinics, with an emphasis on promoting illness prevention strategies and healthy lifestyle choices. This toolbox resource was developed by the Indigenous Lead Centre for the Australian Flexible Learning Framework.

Interactive Ochre - working both ways is an online interactive cultural awareness training package developed by NSW TAFE

The Institute for Global Tobacco Control is involved in developing educational and training programs for tobacco control. Their capacity building webpage includes the following training courses and resources: 

      • comprehensive, free online training course in global tobacco control
      • An intensive, fully-accredited certificate program in tobacco control
      • Leadership programs in tobacco control
      • Credited courses in tobacco control
      • In-country and regional trainings

National Drug Research Institute is a brief intervention training program is a freely available online training module developed for Smoke Free WA Health System Policy.

The Quit Program Educator Training has been developed to assist health professional to deliver tobacco brief interventions using the Quit Fresh Start Program. It is available in some states, with Quit Victoria offering a program adapted for Aboriginal communities. NSWQLDVICSA and WA.

SmokeCheck Qld - This is a tobacco cessation brief intervention training program for primary health care workers to use with Aboriginal and Torres Strait clients in North Queensland as part of Queensland Health's Indigenous Smoke-free Project. SmokeCheck NSW -  This is a tobacco cessation brief intervention training program for primary health care workers to use with Aboriginal and Torres Strait clients in NSW.

Talking about culture - getting it right is and online training program which provides information topics related to Community Engagement and Cultural Interpretation. A quick tour provides an orientation to the site and reference to many support resources is also provided including a broad range of case studies throughout Australia. This resource has been developed by the Indigenous Lead Centre.

Virtual Meeting e-learning actively engages learners to provide them with information to help make decisions and take an active role within a cooperative organisation. Within the virtual environment of the Bindoen Cooperative Organisation the learner is able to develop skills for business governance. This resource has been developed by the Indigenous Lead Centre.

AMSANT administration manual for Aboriginal primary healthcare services - This is a comprehensive manual providing a set of guidelines and tools for health services in the NT

HealthInfoNet is a 'one-stop info-shop' that aims to contribute to 'closing the gap' in health between Indigenous and other Australians by informing practice and policy in Indigenous health by making research and other knowledge readily accessible. It also features a section on Indigenous tobacco use.

Sharing culture online - is a teaching and learning program designed for schools that also has many tools which may be helpful in formulating local health promotion campaigns in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. There is a charge for this program.

A new web resource for Indigenous social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) workers is now available on the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet websiteThe web resource aims to empower the Indigenous SEWB workforce, and build the capacity of the workforce to identify and address mental health issues and associated substance use issues. The web resource consolidates access to, and promotes awareness of, appropriate publications, resources, and mental health screening/assessment tools nationally.

Vibe is an Aboriginal media, communications and events management website containing health information messages for Aborigainal and Torres Strait Islanders including Tobacco control.
